keeping lettuce fresh

I find that bagged lettuce doesn't last very long no matter what you do to it. As I have experimented with several ways to extend the life of lettuce I have found this to be the very best.

First of all don't buy bagged salad(this will work with bagged lettuce but not as good of results). Only buy lettuce heads. After cleaning well be sure to dry it well with paper towels. Then in a large bowl place several folded new papertowels in the bottom and the lettuce head on top of them. Cover with lid(lid shouldn't squish it). You have to change out the paper towels every couple of days or when they start to get moist. Tear off as much lettuce as you need when you need it. Don't let it set out of the fridge too long. My lettuce will last two weeks this way. I'm always amazed. hope this will help you. We too are on a fixed income. Also this keeps the lettuce from freezing when your fridge gets too cold.

I'm doing it the same way like weaver1. I'm using a newspaper, soak it with water and wrap the lettuce. I saw this method once on TV and thought t'll give it a try :D
