Hi,
I'm based in South-East-Asia, Australian born, pretty big guy, 44 years old, still about 300 pounds at 6'6".
Gained 40+ pounds this year since being laid off due to the GFC.
I went through years of believing the "standard" diet info out there, which was that fat was the villain and carbs would elevate the metabolism and make you lose weight. I believe that without having tried to follow this advice I would not have struggled with my weight all these years.
I have tried low-carb diets before and found them easy to follow - living in SEA is a challenge, as you can imagine, but the good thing is that chicken and fish and pork are very cheap, and I live next to a "traditional market" where I can get a huge bag full of vegetables for a couple of dollars.
I tend to try and eat a lot of low-GI and high-fibre vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms. These don't seem to give me insulin spikes or cravings.
One of the biggest challenges is that, without the insulin spikes that I am used to when eating a high carb diets, I don't get hungry very often. So I go from "grazing" all day to eating once or twice a day.
All of 4 days into the diet now and feeling great.
